About Register

Register began as a single notebook — an attempt to map the web the way field researchers map unfamiliar terrain: systematically, honestly, and without editorial agenda. That first log has grown into a directory of 834 charted entries, organised into 22 sections ranging from Courtship & Companion Sites to Expeditions & Voyage Logs. The philosophy of Register is straightforward. The web is vast and often difficult to navigate without a guide. A well-kept directory reduces that problem: it puts known, located sites in front of the person looking for them, organised by territory rather than by algorithm. Register is that directory. Every entry in Register was submitted and reviewed before being added to the log. The sections reflect the actual composition of what was submitted — no section was manufactured to fill a gap, and no entry was placed to pad a tally. The Miscellaneous Outposts section exists precisely because some sites resist classification, and the Register is honest about that. Register is free to consult and free to submit to. Operators of websites that fit any of the 22 sections are welcome to log a submission through the standard form. Submissions are reviewed for basic quality and relevance before being added. The Register does not charge for inclusion; it charges nothing at all. The directory is updated as new submissions are reviewed and admitted. The survey is ongoing, the log is open, and the territory is always expanding. If you know of a site that belongs in the Register and is not yet charted, the submission form is the correct path forward.
